It's been mentioned before that Desmond is a rabbinical student in his spare time. He's been studying for quite some time now, and his teachers have told him that he'll be ready for his ordination soon. The problem is in the scheduling. There's going to be a lot of upheaval in the Wild Republic over the next month or so, which is going to leave him without a lot of time for studying, and is also going to make scheduling the ordination quite difficult.
Desmond is taking this very philosophically, because that's the way he is. Alfredo has agreed to let him have a few days off for study while there's still a lull in activity, and he's been making the most of it.
He's not studying Torah here, actually; he's reading the section on the four Parashiyot in A Guide to Jewish Ritual Practice. I've embiggened this picture so you can see the text if you squint a bit.
Desmond's of the opinion that he knew his rabbinical studies would take a very long time, since he has to do them in his spare time; and in fact he's progressing much faster than he'd anticipated. So a minor delay in the date of his ordination isn't something to fret about. I wish I had his equanimity.
